How customs clearance works: what to declare and what to leave out

March 2026

Customs declaration form and stamp on a shipping document

Every international parcel needs an accurate customs declaration: a short description of the contents, their value, and their purpose (gift, sale, or personal use). Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a shipment gets stuck: a vague description like "goods" or an understated value triggers a manual inspection, which can add days to the delivery.

Declare exactly what's inside, using specific names rather than categories: "cotton t-shirt, size M" rather than "clothing". If the parcel contains multiple items, list each one separately with its own value. A commercial invoice is required for business shipments and B2B orders; personal parcels between individuals only need the declaration form.

Some categories always draw extra scrutiny regardless of value: electronics, cosmetics, and anything with a battery. If you're shipping one of these, mention the model or type explicitly, and check our prohibited and restricted items list before you pack. A clearly declared shipment moves through customs in hours, not days.
